Overall, exports from New Zealand to Japan grew strongly in the first half of 2025, up 5.3% on an annual basis for the year ending June 2025. Dairy, horticulture, and food and beverages exports grew while aluminium, meat and forestry exports declined. Imports from Japan saw a significant decline, mainly in automobiles and oil (diesel). This helped push New Zealand into a trade surplus with Japan for the first time since 2021. Services trade continues to recover but remains below pre-pandemic levels due to the slow recovery of overall outbound tourism from Japan.

With the Takaichi administration term only recently having assumed office it is too early to assess the economic impact of the new administration. The Nikkei Stock Market reacted positively to Prime Minister Takaichi’s inauguration, reaching record highs.

JNZBC members were pleased to host Lucy Duncan, Deputy Chief Executive, MFAT, to a business lunch at the Northern Club in Auckland on Thursday 21 August.  This was a great opportunity for members to meet Lucy and exchange information on the cornerstone importance of the trade and economic relationship between New Zealand and Japan.  Lucy was in Auckland on a busy round of pre-posting calls before leaving for Japan where she will become New Zealand's first female Head of Mission leading the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo following the departure of Hamish Cooper to become New Zealand High Commissioner in London.

MFAT commissioned a research report on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Use of Preferential Tariffs in the Japan Market, specifically for seafood and wine. Japan has introduced new rules that come into effect on 1 June 2025 for food containers and packaging. The changes mean a shift to a “positive list” for synthetic materials that can be included in food containers, packaging, and equipment put up for sale in Japan. The rapid escalation of global trade tensions in recent months has generated a highly uncertain trading environment, which is expected to weigh on global growth. Tariff hikes have started to impact some international merchandise trade flows, with Chinese exports to the United States in April around 20% lower compared to the same month a year ago. The fall in exports to the US looks to have been diverted to markets in Asia and Europe.
