yJNZBC Power Page Competition Winning Entry

Summary of Michelle McCarthy’s winning Power Page

Innovate – Communicate - Collaborate
The NZ-Japan youth industry internship will be the catalyst to future business relations between young professionals in New Zealand and Japan. The JENESYS programme offers NZ youth an inspirational insight into Japanese business and culture. The question is: How can JENESYS alumni capitalise on the opportunities created, the knowledge gained and the invaluable networks formed during their trip, to further develop and build a relationship with Japan into the future?

The industry internship will allow young professionals from Japan and NZ to be based in each other’s country to undertake short-medium term industry research or collaboration. Co working spaces will be asked to dedicate one desk to the initiative in order for young professionals to base themselves from one of the 10 co working spaces in NZ or 100 in Japan. Co working spaces are shared office spaces which support increased innovation and entrepreneurship by bringing together people with different thought processes, experiences, and talents.

Through support from the local economic development agencies/chamber of commerce, young professionals will be able to link into local business networks. Benefits of the initiative will include: increased collaboration opportunities within target industries; an insight into new models & different ways of thinking; and a better understanding of business language and practises.

Young people are fresh, enthusiastic and have a great deal of knowledge and skill when it comes to building relationships. yJNZBC position themselves firmly within the wider Council, with the yJNZBC Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson sitting on the Executive of the Council-proper.

The aim of this is to compliment the work undertaken Youth Advocates and so there is an open line of communication. Tasked with providing tangible results, the yJNZBC has appointed sector leaders to drive our initiatives, mirroring the structure style of the JNZBC.

The yJNZBC Foundation Members offer much experience currently working with senior business leaders and their companies to ensure their business interests are well connected into the next generation.

The Foundation Members have established networks and understand the nuance of business relations with Japan. They have travelled, studied and worked professionally in Japan and are well placed to mentor Youth Advocates.

Delivering real value to our Youth members is paramount. We encourage and offer big ideas, strong relationships and access to senior Members and international delegates. Our intention is to support Track-II dialogue between Japan and New Zealand and showcase not only analytical skill but practical applications.
